Harp Seal Watch, Magdalen Islands, Quebec, March 2012
The Magdelan Islands are an archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence reached by air from Quebec City, Quebec. After booking this trip in 2011 and having it cancelled due to lack of ice for the seals (global warming at work!), this try was very successful. You visit the seals by helicopter. You are outfitted with a bright orange survival suit that also serves as floatation. The baby seals only stay white for three weeks while they are nursing. Once weaned, they lose the white fur they are known and are on their own. Even this Florida girl was able to stay warm. When not on the ice, various activities in town were planning including an introduction to curling and visiting various artists.
